For those of us who attended, the 2024 National Prayer Breakfast was an encouraging event to be a part of. In addition to the Breakfast itself, there was lots going on. The Young Christian Leaders Summit gave young adults from the Church a peek behind the curtain of political careers on Parliament Hill. There were several seminars, panel discussions, and networking opportunities for pastors, ministry leaders, and those in politics.

Bill C-63 is known as the Online Harms Act. Bill C-314, was defeated in the House of Commons on October 18. This bill was tabled by conservative MP for Abbotsford, The Honourable Ed Fast to stop the Liberal government’s expansion of assisted suicide to vulnerable Canadians with mental illness. The bill provides that the term “grievous and irremediable medical condition” contained in Canada’s MAiD regime does not include mental disorders.

Bill C-314 is an act that seeks to reverse the latest offering on the table for MAiD – Medical Assistance in dying. If passed, mental disorder would no longer be an eligibility to receive MAiD. The preamble of the act encourages proper supports be in place for Canadians with mental health issues and that suicide prevention counselling be the first consideration over access to medical assistance in dying.

On Tuesday October 3rd, Liberal MP Greg Fergus replaced Anthony Rota as the new Speaker. Mr. Fergus is the first black Canadian to become Speaker. Prime Minister Trudeau commented following the election, “This should be inspiring for all Canadians.” Fergus said that every MP has more in common than they would want to admit and that he would lead firmly, thoughtfully, and collaboratively.

This enactment would amend the Criminal Code to provide that a mental disorder is not a grievous and irremediable medical condition for which a person could receive medical assistance in dying. In short, it would mean that no one would be eligible for MAID for mental illness alone.

C-11, the online streaming act is now law. Senators voted 52- 16 on the version that the House of Commons passed last month. Royal Assent was given Thursday evening. One of the main concerns of this bill is that its language is vague.

Bill C-11 is the proposed “Online Streaming Act” in Canada. It has been sent back to the Senate for further review as of March 30, 2023.

In the recent news, there have been leaks regarding the interference of the People’s Party of China on our federal elections. These disclosures were brought to us via Canada’s mainstream media from CSIS whistleblowers. Both CSIS and the RCMP are investigating these leaks for possible violations of the Security of Information Act. Canadians would like to see an investigation into the actual allegations of foreign interference.
