For those of us who attended, the 2024 National Prayer Breakfast was an encouraging event to be a part of. In addition to the Breakfast itself, there was lots going on. The Young Christian Leaders Summit gave young adults from the Church a peek behind the curtain of political careers on Parliament Hill. There were several seminars, panel discussions, and networking opportunities for pastors, ministry leaders, and those in politics.

Bill C-314, was defeated in the House of Commons on October 18. This bill was tabled by conservative MP for Abbotsford, The Honourable Ed Fast to stop the Liberal government’s expansion of assisted suicide to vulnerable Canadians with mental illness. The bill provides that the term “grievous and irremediable medical condition” contained in Canada’s MAiD regime does not include mental disorders.

The preamble of the act encourages proper supports be in place for Canadians with mental health issues and that suicide prevention counselling be the first consideration over access to medical assistance in dying.

On Tuesday October 3rd, Liberal MP Greg Fergus replaced Anthony Rota as the new Speaker. Mr. Fergus is the first black Canadian to become Speaker. This enactment would amend the Criminal Code to provide that a mental disorder is not a grievous and irremediable medical condition for which a person could receive medical assistance in dying. In short, it would mean that no one would be eligible for MAID for mental illness alone.
