2024 National Prayer Breakfast
For those of us who attended, the 2024 National Prayer Breakfast was an encouraging event to be a part of. In addition to the Breakfast itself, there was lots going on. The Young Christian Leaders Summit gave young adults from the Church a peek behind the curtain of political careers on Parliament Hill. There were several seminars, panel discussions, and networking opportunities for pastors, ministry leaders, and those in politics.

Bill C-63
Bill C-63 is known as the Online Harms Act. The bill tackles instances of sharing intimate images without consent, as well as content that bullies children, sexually victimizes children, encourages self-harm among children, and incites violence, terrorism, or hatred.
We support the section of the bill that calls for removing content that bullies children, sexually exploits them, promotes self-harm among them, as well as non-consensual adult content.

Use of Emergency Act was unreasonable and unlawful
A ruling made by Federal Court Justice Richard Mosley stated that the use of the Emergency’s Act to shut down Freedom Convoy protests in Ottawa 2 years ago was unreasonable and unlawful. Mosley said, “to issue the Proclamation does not bear the hallmarks of reasonableness – justification, transparency and intelligibility – and was not justified in relation to the relevant factual and legal constraints that were required to be taken into consideration.”

Bill C-314 is an act that seeks to reverse the latest offering on the table for MAiD – Medical Assistance in dying. If passed, mental disorder would no longer be an eligibility to receive MAiD. The preamble of the act encourages proper supports be in place for Canadians with mental health issues and that suicide prevention counselling be the first consideration over access to medical assistance in dying.

Bill C-314 to stop the expansion of MAiD
The Honorable Ed Fast, Member of Parliament for Abbotsford, BC tabled a bill in February of this year. This enactment would amend the Criminal Code to provide that a mental disorder is not a grievous and irremediable medical condition for which a person could receive medical assistance in dying. In short, it would mean that no one would be eligible for MAID for mental illness alone.
