End Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery

We had the honour of talking with MP Arnold Viersen on human trafficking and modern slavery in Canada, and what you can do to help.

[Music] all right hi everybody it's Chris weiberg the director of the national House of Prayer we're here today on Parliament Hill with MP Arnold veersen and we're going to speak about one of the Committees that Arnold is serving on it's a fantastic committee it's a committee having to do with human trafficking and human slavery so take away Arnold oh thank you thank you Chris and yeah this uh it's the all party group 10 human trafficking and modern day slavery human trafficking is happening within 10 blocks or 10 minutes of where you live even right here in Canada one of the things I speak on this all across Canada and around the world and one of the things that people are

always like well that might be a problem Arnold but it's not a problem right here in Canada is it well it is a problem here in Canada and it's a growing uh profitable crime that's happening across Canada with guaranteed within 10 minutes of where you live now you can get involved in your local communities there are anti-human tracking organizations functioning across this country you're your local church group maybe maybe hosting one of these organizations but I'm sure that in your community there is a group that is fighting human trafficking and I encourage you to get involved with them in Canada human trafficking mostly takes on the form of sex trafficking so people that are

forced to work in the in prostitution however there is also quite a bit of Labor trafficking that happens and you may remember more recently in the news there was a incident in Berry where hotel workers were being forced to work Mexican hotel workers uh were being trafficked there as well so um is it was a problem across Canada there have been a group of members of parliament have come together all party members uh so myself I am one of the co-chairs of the conservative party John McCabe from the Liberal Party Senator mavel de Shane who's an independent Senator and Andrea and loash From the Block we have we are the co-chairs of this all party group 10 human

trafficking and modern day slavery and we have had some significant successes over the last couple of years we've managed to get February 22nd recognized as a anti-human trafficking awareness day and we also have Bill s 211 we just got that passed through the House of Commons it's just we come into law here it's got received oil sent about a month ago and that bill would make it so that Canadian companies would have to file a report with the government as to the impacts their company is having on human trafficking both here and around the world so that's a bit of a background on on our all party group and thanks for your interest Chris well thank you Arnold this was very informative so I
